Worth the drive from El Reno: how families make 30 minutes work

We're about half an hour from El Reno, in Mustang. Here's how El Reno families plan their week so the drive pays off, and why the county's only OJA judo club is the one they choose.

Three ways to make the drive count

Every El Reno family we talk to asks the same thing: how do we get the most out of each trip? These are the setups that work.

Stack the evening

Combine the After School Program (4 to 6 pm) with evening judo or wrestling (6 to 7:30 pm). One drive covers the whole afternoon and evening. Kids eat a packed dinner between.

Pick two nights, not four

The $150 Athlete membership covers two or more classes a week. Most El Reno families choose Monday judo and Thursday wrestling, or both judo nights.

Make it a full day

For homeschool and online-school students, the Student-Athlete Academy turns one round trip into a full school day plus two training sessions.

The route

Head east on I-40 from Rock Island Avenue for about 13 miles, take the Kilpatrick Turnpike south, exit at Morgan Road, and continue to Highway 152. We're on East Highline Lane, between Mustang Road and Morgan Road.

In the evening, give yourself about 35 minutes for I-40 traffic. In the morning, after school-zone rush, it's closer to 30.

Why not train closer to home?

If your child wants to compete in judo, their club has to belong to the Oklahoma Judo Association. Dominion is the only OJA member club in Canadian County, which makes us the El Reno-area option for sanctioned OJA and USA Judo tournaments.

Questions from El Reno families

How far is Dominion Academy from El Reno?

About 23 miles, or roughly 30 minutes, via I-40 east and the Kilpatrick Turnpike.

Can my child go straight from after school into an evening class?

Yes. The After School Program runs 4 to 6 pm and evening classes start at 6, Monday through Thursday. Kids 9 and up with a class membership can stay for both.

Is Dominion the closest judo club to El Reno?

We're the only Oklahoma Judo Association member club in Canadian County, which includes El Reno. That's what allows students to enter OJA and USA Judo tournaments.

Do I have to come four nights a week?

No. Most El Reno families come once or twice a week. Pick the nights that fit and choose the $75 or $150 membership to match.
